Eating Out and the “What Should I Order?” Question

Ever run into trouble when you are trying to eat healthy and limit your fast food intake? For example, your friend is having a party and invited you to go out to eat. Or you might be a student on the go with no time to pack a lunch. Do not worry! I have some tips that will keep you covered the next time you eat out.

Everyone is faced with the question “what should I order?” while eating out. People often wonder what is healthy on a menu and what is not. For example, is fried fish healthy because it is fish? Is it okay to order french fries because potatoes are vegetables? Apples are healthy, so is it okay to order that apple pie? Unfortunately, these are not the healthiest options. But you can follow these easy tips to choose healthier meals the next time you go out:

  • Meat and dairy
    • Choose baked or lightly grilled meat instead of fried.
    • Try to choose low-fat dairy options (like skimmed milk instead of whole milk).
  • Vegetables
    • Choose baked or lightly grilled vegetables instead of fried.
    • Ask for extra vegetables on your sandwich instead of extra cheese.
  • Salad
    • Add as many vegetables and fruits as you would like.
    • Limit the cheese on your salad.
    • Choose to add healthy meats (baked fish, chicken, turkey, etc.) instead of red meat options (beef and pork, including bacon).
    • Ask for a low fat dressing or simple vinaigrette (olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and herbs) instead of salad dressing.
    • Ask for dressing on the side rather than directly on the salad. This way you can limit the amount of dressing on your salad.
  • Drinks and beverages
    • Unsweetened beverages instead of sweetened beverages.
    • Sweeten beverages with honey or stevia instead of sugar and artificial sweeteners.
    • Choose water, low-fat milk, or 100% juice instead of pop or soda.
    • Add low-fat milk to your coffee or tea instead of creamer
  • Sweets and desserts
    • Choose fruits rather than sugary treats.
    • Choose low-fat yogurt topped with fruit, instead of ice-cream.
    • Choose baked treats rather than fried treats.
    • Ask for sugar free or fat free options.

Hopefully these tips will help you keep on track with your healthy eating goal. Good Luck!

Scarleteen’s Safer Sex…For Your Heart!

Hi Cornerites,
Okay, seriously, stop what you’re doing and go read Heather Corinna’s blog post on emotionally safe sex. Like, right now. I’ll wait.

That white rabbit is late again…..<image thanks to giphy>

You done?
Okay, here’s my favorite paragraph:

Just like using condoms, gloves and dams, and having regular sexual health care is preventative medicine to do your best to stay physically safe and healthy; being on the lookout for high emotional risks, hurtful or unrealistic situations, or potential sexual and emotional trouble is preventative medicine to stay emotionally healthy, and help those you’re involved with do the same. It’d be silly and shortsighted to only give information on a sexually transmitted disease after one already has it, or to avoid looking at what we could do to lessen the likelihood of getting one in the first place. So, think of the following pages as preventative medicine for sexually transmitted infections of the emotional variety. If you get informed, keep a watchful eye and protect yourself and those you care for from the very start, you’re much more likely to remain healthy and happy and sexually well, above, as well as below, the waist.

….sigh…. <image thanks to giphy>

So, the next time you’re starting a relationship, make sure the sex is as safe to your heart as it is to your body. And if a relationship you are in somehow messes with your heart OR your body, come to the Corner Health Center to make sure you are as healthy as you can be.

How to Have a Love Affair with Yourself

Ok ok I know that this topic sounds cheesy or maybe even a little bizarre, but I’m going to talk about it anyways because it’s sooooooo important!!!!!   I have been writing a lot about healthy relationships with friends, family, and boyfriends/girlfriends, but I think it’s time to focus in on the most important relationship- the one we have with ourselves!

Let’s start with 5 steps towards finding love within yourself.  I’m not saying that this is easy, love is never without work, but maybe a little hard work is worth the reward…..

1. Say nice things – Criticism never changes a thing. It creates self-doubt and promotes a negative attitude. Instead, find ways to compliment yourself every day.

2. Be bigger, stronger, wiser, and kind – treat yourself to kindness every day. Stand up for what’s right and hold your tongue if what you are about to say could hurt someone you care about.

3. Challenge your thoughts- evaluate and observe your negative thoughts and work to gently change your thoughts to more loving ones.

4. Take care of your body- ever heard the phrase your body is a temple? How do you want to worship your body? Sleep restores. Eat foods that nourish you. Finally, find the parts of your body that you love and celebrate them!

5. I think I’ll leave this with the famous words of Harry Potter…
