"The counselor is great! He helped me get into and pay for college. I could have never done this without his help."

  Youth Aging-Out Program

Since March 2007 The Corner Health Center, in collaboration with Community Support and Treatment Services (CSTS) of Washtenaw Community Health Organization (WCHO), has offered a resource program for youth who have ever lived somewhere other than with their parent(s). This includes relatives, friends, juvenile detention, foster or group homes, or a shelter.

Program staff educate patients about and provide help in applying for available resources. Gary Carpenter, case manager, claims that finances are the main issue for teens transitioning out of care. Teens don’t know the resources that are available such as money for a deposit or first month’s rent on an apartment; college tuition; tutoring; help finding a job and applying for post secondary education; and legal advocacy.
