Since March 2007 The Corner Health Center, in collaboration with Community Support and Treatment Services (CSTS) of Washtenaw Community Health Organization (WCHO), has offered a resource program for youth who have ever lived somewhere other than with their parent(s). This includes relatives, friends, juvenile detention, foster or group homes, or a shelter.
The program's case manager, who is a former foster parent, claims that finances are the main issue for teens transitioning out of care. Teens don’t know the resources that are available such as money for a deposit or first month’s rent on an apartment; college tuition; tutoring; help finding a job and applying for post secondary education; and legal advocacy.
Program staff educate patients about and provide help in applying for available resources.
