“I was struck by the incredible power of combining theatre and education…The performance itself was compelling and painfully real…The adolescents take in the reality of these very serious situations in a very intense way. They are forced to really grapple with them…”
- High School Teacher

“Our audiences are willing to believe what we have to say because we’ve been there.”

This effective prevention program promotes discussion on sensitive topics, models positive behaviors and coping skills, and provides practice using effective communication and resistance skills. The Theatre Troupe/ Peer Education Project provide presentations on topics of concern to youth such as substance abuse, tobacco use, HIV / STI, depression and dating violence.  Audience members include young people in traditional as well as alternative educational settings, community centers and residential programs.

Trained by a health educator and actor/playwright in an after-school program, local teenagers use their insight and experiences to create interactive presentations that capture the trust, interest and imagination of their peers.

Presentations usually include three educational sessions within a one to two week period.

  1. interactive theater performance – a skit followed by an in and out of character discussion with the audience
  2. reality workshops -- young people in recovery or living with HIV share their personal stories
  3. skill-building workshop -- students practice communication and resistance skills through educational activities and role-playing exercises
