Youth Voice Reaches New Heights

Youth Voice Reaches New Heights

“The more we increase the active participation and partnership with young people, the better we serve them. … And the more comprehensively we work with them as service partners, the more we increase our public value to the entire community.” -Carmen Martinez

Check out these new initiatives that will expand youth participation at the Corner in 2014!

Youth on Board

Our Board of Directors recently approved bylaw changes to include youth as board members. We view this initiative as an opportunity to enhance the leadership skills of young people who regularly use the Corner’s services. We also see this as a way to include young people in decision-making.

This May, we will elect our first youth cohort. Up to four young people ages 16 – 21 will serve renewable, two-year terms. Youth board members will complete an extensive orientation process, receive routine support from staff and adult board members, and participate in regular board governance trainings.

Did you know that Michigan state law allows young people ages 16 and older to serve as full voting members on nonprofit boards? To learn more about engaging youth on boards, take a look at 15 Points: Successfully Involving Youth in Decision-Making.

Youth-Led Clinic Evaluation

Our Youth Leadership Council (YLC) recently began a nine-month process to evaluate our clinic as a youth friendly space. So far they have assessed our educational materials, exam rooms and clinic lobby. Over the next few months, the YLC plans to hold focus groups with young people and review patient satisfaction surveys. Based on their findings, the YLC will create an action plan with staff to make our clinic more responsive to the needs of young people of all identities. A $4,000 grant from the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation’s Youth Council will help to support this project.

Youth to Evaluate Impact of Theatre Troupe Program

This winter, the Theatre Troupe will evaluate the program’s long-term impact on its members. With support from Troupe staff and a graduate student form the University of Michigan School of Social Work, current Troupe members will interview and survey former program participants. If you or someone you know used to be in Theatre Troupe, please contact Craig VanKempen or Joey Albright to connect with this project.
