Brianna Williams and Kiristen Hubbard, members of the Corner’s Youth Leadership Council and Theatre Troupe programs, co-presented with Corner staff at the School-Based Health Alliance’s national conference in Washington D.C. on June 21. Their presentation, Creating an Organizational Culture to Support Youth-Adult Partnerships, highlighted strategies to promote meaningful youth participation in organizational decision-making. Brianna and Kiristen also participated in the conference’s robust youth-track sessions, interacting with twenty-five youth from across the country and learning about the Affordable Care Act and adolescent health care. They also visited U.S. Rep. John Dingell’s office to advocate for federal funding for adolescent health care. When asked about her time in the nation’s capital, Kiristen said, “Presenting at a national conference was an amazing experience. It was great to meet other young people who are involved and interested in issues like the Affordable Care Act. This opportunity gave me a chance to do something meaningful and positive over the summer.”

In August, Max Abuelsamid and Brianna Williams co-presented with Corner staff at an annual statewide conference, Moving Toward Solutions: Addressing Teen Pregnancy Prevention in Michigan, hosted by the Michigan Department of Community Health and Michigan Department of Education. In their presentation, Edutainment, Max and Brianna performed the Theatre Troupe’s HIV/STI prevention play. Following their performance, they answered questions about the operation of the Theatre Troupe and the value of arts-based peer health education. Says Max about his advocacy for peer health education, “I believe it is important to inform other groups about our program because it helps to expand our reach and influences them to use similar outreach strategies.” During 2012-13, the Theatre Troupe performed 47 times for more than 1,200 audience members.
