Meet Derek Anders, Corner Volunteer

Derek AndersDerek Anders volunteers as a member of the Corner Health Center's Community Advisory Council (CAC).  A father of three, Derek's daughter Briahna, a Corner Theatre Troupeparticipant, suggested he become a CAC member. As part of the CAC Derek helps review and make recommendations about the Corner's policies, services, and programs.  After the first meeting he was 'hooked' and for two years, Derek has been heavily involved in volunteering at the Corner Health Center.

Derek also volunteers as a Corner Ambassador. This program, an outgrowth of the CAC, engages community members to spread the word about the services offered at the Corner. These include comprehensive medical care, mental health, support and education services for young people, ages 12 through 21, and their children regardless of ability to pay or insurance status.  Derek says, "Being an ambassador for the Corner provides me the opportunity to get out into the community, talk to young people and let them know what the Corner has to offer them.  As an ambassador I also inform people about how they can get involved with the Corner."  Part of Derek's ambassador duties take place at Washtenaw Community College (WCC), where he also works as a Help Desk Specialist. He distributes Corner materials around campus and engages in conversations about the Corner's services with students and staff.

What drove Derek to pursue community work was the passing of his wife of 25 years. This life changing experience brought him to community service because, although he had never done community work before, he always had a desire to do so. Derek characterizes his work with the Corner as “fulfilling because of the great services the Corner provides for young people.”

Derek has been an Ypsilanti resident since 1992. When not working, serving the community or doing outreach for the Corner, Derek enjoys doing sound work at his church, the Christian Love Fellowship Ministries International, and is an avid college football fan!
